California: DOJ grand jury subpoenas election officials
THE FACTSBetween Oct 21 and 24 the Justice Department sent grand jury subpoenas to California election officials, including Los Angeles County’s registrar, over claims that up to 20,000 noncitizens may be registered to vote. A federal judge refused to order those ballots set aside.
LEFT
Intimidating the people who count the votes
Judge David Carter said the federal demand broke longstanding principles that leave elections to the states, and wrote that “these threats must stop.” LA registrar Dean Logan says his office follows state and federal law, and courts at two levels have backed it.

Noncitizen voting is a crime
After losing the civil case, the DOJ says criminal law is the proper remedy, since “all agree” noncitizen voting belongs there, and that a subpoena doesn’t make anyone a target. Supporters say the goal is to make sure only citizens vote.
